ARTSPROJEKT STUDIO 5 Interview with Squindo

Posted on Nov 17
Our latest artist is an Artsprojekt pioneer, joining up with us since the beginning.  We had a quick opportunity to catch up with Squindo, and ask him about some things he's working on right now, as well as where he got his roots.

AP: Deep in the sticks some guy is blow torching his driveway. Who IS he?!

SQ: Just a knuckle-head trying to make a buck drawing goofy pictures. I've had "lead" in my veins from an early age... literally, jabbed myself in the head twice with pencils as a kid. Once in the roof if the mouth and the other next to my eye. Got a couple stitches for the second one. Once I was past that, I never stopped, drawing constantly. (mostly cause the chicks dug it!) Growing up, I knew it was what I wanted to do but assuming that it would be a cool way to make extra cash on the side. And after years of everything from construction to cooking for work, I realized it was all I really wanted to do... just had to figure how to make it work. While living in a busted up trailer on top of the windiest mountain in NEPA, I began to illustrate kids books written by my brother. The trailer is another story completely...some interesting redneck moments!! Again, sucky job and welfare didn’t cut it so back in a basement in the stink of central jersey. Until finally my freelance work picked up enough to run to the hills again. Now I try to make this work in my own log cabin, working on art, cars, tattoos and sometimes blow torching the thick ice off my rocky driveway.

AP: Tell us about your love of bondo...

SQ: I work with what I know. I learned to work with bondo on hotrods in my uncle’s garage in the mid 80s. Several of my own cars were practically pure bondo. When I started sculpting, I wanted something I understood and could add onto, grind or carve. The last undertaking was a giant squid bowling pin. I went a little further then I had before with this one. The core is wire, covered in fiberglass and topped off with body filler. It took nearly 200 hours and some serious wear and tear on my lungs and fingertips. Sanding alone was a nightmare but the final result was pretty damn cool.

AP: What are you making right now?

SQ: I just finished some pinup shop girls and now starting a painting for the anniversary of the bones ripper design for the ASR trade show in January. Mostly, I work on my freelance jobs.

AP: Metallica has been using your images for years. What is your relationship with Lars and the rest of the band?

SQ: Been with Metallica since the end of 1999 after meeting Lars backstage at a show in NYC. I've been a fan as long as I remember. At a show a few years earlier (Metallica, Suicidal, Danzig) I was dreaming out load with my future wife and brother in law, thinking how cool it would be to do art for these guys!! The first year of working with them I had a few top selling designs. Its an amazing rush to see all my art at a merch booth or on backs all over an arena. The guys are all really cool and down to earth. We've been able to hang out with them a few times and I've done some work for James and his family on the side. Most of my band design work goes thru the fan club or management with some art direction straight from the guys. And after almost ten years, it still blows my mind sometimes when I realize that I actually work for them. It’s not too shabby a job.

AP: Describe your dream ride...

SQ: My dream ride....I'll take one that works! I've always been into hotrods. My first project at 15 was a 41 Plymouth pickup that I never finished. First ride was a 66 Pontiac Catalina that I sadly sold just a few years ago. Over the years I've had a bunch of cool and not so cool cars but always the dream ride was a 27 to 33 two door sedan. Low and scary looking. Something that makes people run for cover. If it looks like one of my hotrod paintings, I'd be happy. Been working on a 35 Chevy four door and a 60 Chevy panel truck but its a bit to costly right now. Our main cruiser is a crusty 54 Chevy 2 door.
