Skateboarder and artist Andy Howell, along with teen assistant artists, worked all day June 14 on the colorful project.
Seemingly oblivious to the hot sun beating down upon them, they completed a new mural at the Banning Skate Park at Repplier Park.
The mural painting was part of a full day's events at the park.
Beginning around noon, Howell arrived and immediately went to work creating the large mural.
Occasionally he would take a break and enjoy cool shade under the large trees of Repplier Park.
Howell brought along copies of his book “Art, Skateboarding and Life,” which he signed and sold during his breaks.
Many of the youth attending seemed overjoyed to spend time talking with him about his experiences as a professional skateboarder.
The Skate Park was well attended while the mural was being painted and the kids seemed happy to have a place of their own to enjoy.
By about 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening the mural was finished.
A talented young artist, Lara Bello of Beaumont, painted alongside Howell for the entire day, along with two other teens.
At 1 p.m. the scheduled “Battle of the Bands” began, with eight bands participating at the Park Bowl.
Performing were Kisnat, Socially Retarded, Inhale, Shyton, New Symmetry, Nuevo, Point Blank and Never Even.
Banning Mayor Brenda Salas awarded the winners of the competition. The band “Inhale” captured first place, while “Socially Retarded” took second and “Point Blank” third. Honorable mention for best instrumental went to “New Symmetry.”
“I really want to give special thanks to the City of Banning Parks and Recreation Department for all of their support and assistance in making this day such a great success,” said Selena Wilson of the Youth Arts Council, a division of the Banning Cultural Alliance. “We also want to thank Mayor Salas for her participation as a judge in the Battle of the Bands.”
“We will be planning a Phase Two of the skate park mural soon,” she said."
